Small press to make Plump and add to our batch of Wild Heirloom. That first photo is Granny Smith from two locations. Those dark ones are from @encodedstudio tree and the light ones are from Lewicki Ranch and Vineyard in Creston. Same variety, but massively different in color. Those plums for Plump came from Chris and Bryan. So much thanks. The blend for this is usually Granny Smith and Pink Lady but we decided to top up the batch with a little Newtown Pippin as well. And all those super colorful apples are a mix of varieties from Lewicki Ranch and Vineyard. St Cecilia Pippin, Arkansas Black, Fuji, Braeburn… so many fun varieties.

Remember when She Turned Me Into A Newt? Lol. No no. We actually mean the cider we made. The primary apple in that blend is an heirloom called Newtown Pippin that was quite preferred by Queen Victoria. We usually only give a fancy name to a cider if it is a blend, but Lilly on our press gang did have a great idea; It’s Pip to be Square. Most likely you will just see this released as Newtown Pippin since it is a single varietal. It’s a green apple that gets a reddish brown cheek in the sun. Often donut or saucer shaped, these apples can also have a very nice butt, as you can see in some of these pictures. A delightful crunch and light tannin gives it a beautiful texture and balance. These apples are organic from @thefivemileorchard near Corralitos, CA. Martinelli’s is famous for making their sparkling apple cider from apples of this area and Newtown Pippin specifically. They have canceled and sunsetted many contracts with growers in favor of cheaper juice with a higher carbon footprint. As a result, many old growth apple trees are being pulled up and burned. This is a devastating loss impacting the community, economy, and sustainability of the area. So by purchasing these apples at Five Mile we have kept this important cultural resource in the ground, this important natural resource and natural method for carbon capture, and a beautiful tree. In turn, when you purchase this cider, you will have helped to preserve these trees. Thank you in advance 😊
